Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT)
|
EVLT is a new, advanced technique to treat the major cause of vein responsible for
varicose veins, using a no-scar, no-surgery method. A laser fiber is inserted into
the hidden saphenous vein, responsible for the more superficial varicose veins,
through a small needle hole. This is done using ultrasound guidance. The laser light
is painlessly delivered into the vein leading to its immediate collapse. EVLT is
a comfortable procedure done in the office under local anesthesia. The procedure
takes about forty-five minutes. It is minimally invasive, with no scarring and no
time is required off work for recovery. Studies have shown that it is as effective
and durable as vein stripping surgery with out the associated complications of surgery.
Occasionally, small superficial veins may require treatment with sclerotherapy or
phlebectomy. This procedure is currently not covered by OHIP but may be covered
by some private insurance companies.
